Cape Saint Marys Gannet Colony

Above, David Sparks is positioned very close to the peak of a small peninsula carved out if these amazing cliffs. We parked our van at the visitors center and hiked a full mile to where David is sitting. The 2 images below where taken from just past the visitors center, first one with my 18-70, and the second with my 200-400 mm lens. (they were taken at different times!)

I am not sure, but I think the estimated population of this colony is 15,000 birds. We picked a good time to visit, as the chick population was also extensive. A little smelly, a few flies, but the shooting opportunity made up for it in a big way! (3,179 images with my D300 alone!)

We spent about 5 hours here in the morning, and about 4 hours in the evening, sweet and awesome light throughout the day! One could virtually fire frames none stop here for hours.

Thanks to Chris Bridge for hiking up the hill late in the day and locating the ptarmigans!! Awesome!! I will edit a couple of those shots soon. All in all, a great day.

This is the scene at 38mm with my D300, you can see if you look closely, there are 2 people at the location where David is shooting above. Click on the image for the full size.

Here is the scene later in the day @ 400mm with the D300, from just under a mile away. You can see Glenn, Chris, and David at the peninsula.

And a few images to see why we went all this distance! At one point, David, Chris and I shimmied down the cliff face to get a shot of a Muir trying to grab and run with a razorbill chick!!, just down below of where Glenn is shooting on the left side of the group above.

My third guest, Chris Bridge is still in Newfoundland, touring with his wife. Hopefully in a few weeks, he will get all that editing caught up, and I can post some of his images.

So, lets start with Dave Sparks... I met Dave through NPN, (Nature Photographers Network) after he posted an amazing image of a merganser surfacing after a dive.. what a great shot. Dave participated in a PDF image file my wife and I created to share some cool images from 12 photographers.

We have kept in touch since than, and we sure enjoyed Newfoundland together for the first time.

Here are 10 of Dave's awesome images.

Glenn Nagel and I have been friends on DP review, and also, on Nikon Cafe for a few years now, amazing how forums bring people together! Glenn has been into photography for a long time, his hobby is truly his passion. Glenn's diligence, and organizational skills are truly outstanding.

Colour and contrasting patterns draw Glenn's eye as you will see if you take a few moments to review his website. The 4 of us got along so well, we all shared our thoughts and opinions about techniques and photo editing. Our shooting conditions were not always the best, but we sure had a great time!

Here are a few of Glenn's shots...

Newfoundland Orca pod take down a Minke Whale!

August 14, 2010

And we were there!! Wow, it was so cool when we witnessed this amazing kill south of St. Johns NL., near Witless Bay. I was hosting a photography workshop with my 3 guests, when we were lucky enough to get on this amazing nature experience.

Eco-tours and boat captain Tyler and his 22' Zodiac took the 4 of us out to the site in some pretty rough water. It was difficult to get images, as the boat was tossed around, but after 2000+ shots, and 2 hours, it was just too dark to continue.

The sot below shows the Minky's nose on the far left, coming up to the top of the water for a split second. Thanks to Glenn, David, and Chris for being there to enjoy this event! And thanks to Lori Colbert for arranging this trip!
