Ray,

You probably have loads of testimonials but I wanted to complement you on the superb workshop last Saturday. You offered pertinent information and tips that helped with the Snowy shoot and made my experience memorable. The venue was superb and you handled the large group skillfully. I will be joining other workshops you host as this one proved to be good value.

I have attached my favorite from this session. Ideally I would have liked symmetrical eyes but the gaping beak and breath made it for me anyway :)

Thank you so much for the wonderful Snowy Owl Workshop this past weekend at the Canadian Raptor Conservancy. What a treat it was to finally be able to see this beautiful owl up close! I have attempted trying to find this amazing owl in the wild, but have never had much luck. I found your instructions and tips very helpful.

In the past I have only taken photographs of landscapes and underwater scenes. When Brenda and I went on the Muskoka Wildlife Centre fund raising cruise in 2010, we saw the wonderful pictures that Ray Barlow had taken of the wildlife at the centre. I also discovered he runs workshops at the centre so I signed up for a winter photo shoot this year.

Of course it turned out to be the coldest day of the winter so far. It was -23c when I pulled into the parking lot of the Centre, 10 minutes south of Gravenhurst. When I left four hours later, it had climbed to a balmy -13c. However, there was no snow and except for having to deal with shadows, a bright and sunny day for taking pictures.

Ray gave us a briefing in the centre before we went out. This is when I discovered I was using a completely different technique for taking pictures than those I'd been learning with Andrew Collett on his landscape workshops. Had I thought, I would have practiced some of the changed settings before I went. As it was, I think I got them close enough for the 560 pictures I took. Yes, I discovered you take a great many more pictures of something that is constantly moving than a nice subdued landscape. The dozen or so pictures here are the distillation of those 560.

During Ray's briefing, I discovered we were not just walking around the center taking pictures but actually getting into most of the pens with the animals and that the Centre staff would be helping in herding them so we could take great pictures. I did not know we were going to get up and personnel with the animals. Very exciting.

Next, Dale Gienow, one of the co-directors of the Centre, gave us a safety briefing on how we would entering and exiting the pens and how he would be positioning us so that the animals had a 'safe zone' in which they were close but comfortable. Something about the animals getting a safe zone but us poor humans just on our own was a bit concerning. As it turned out, we were able to get inside all of the cages except for the mountain lion. For those shots we were able to get inside the first fence so we could take pictures through the openings in the links of the fence as opposed to through the fence. After signing the customary waiver, we were off to take pictures. It would turn out to be one of the most existing three hours I've spent taking pictures.

Most of the animals in these pictures are rescue animals from people who attempted to raise them as pets. So when I say 'herd' they are not trying to put them in unnatural exposure to people. The Centre respects they are wild animals and need their safe zone.

I live in Kimberley, British Columbia in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Ten years ago I decided to try my hand at painting as I have always loved to draw. I started out with oils and then switched to acrylics about 2 years later. I had a lot of struggles along the way because I was self-taught but then took a 5 day course from Terry Isaac which really helped me improve my artwork.

I have always been very much in love with every aspect of nature even though I mostly paint wildlife and raptor birds. I like to capture nature on canvas, rock or wood, in a unique and special way, meaning something not often observed by most.

When I came across Ray Barlow's photography site, I was hooked. I thought to myself, this guy has the eye for capturing those very special moments in a photograph that I like to portray on canvas. I love using Ray's work for my reference material as I feel we truly view nature and it's beauty in the same way. That's one thing I want my art work to reflect, and that is something that is not the norm. I want it to be something that people are wowed about and say, " Look at that, now that is something you don't see everyday!" That's how I feel when I get an opportunity to paint one of Ray's spectacular photographs!

What an Awesome Bird!

After the snowy owl shoot this past weekend on Sunday, we
asked our guests if they were interested in photographing a few
birds in flight, as James had some extra free time.

So, we all chipped in 20 bucks, and had a blast with
the Red-tailed Hawk, and this Harris's Hawk. So, here we have
hawk meeting hawk! My buddy and guest for the
day Leigh Bierd provided a special perch

for this bird to close out the day!

The Saturday shoot was also pretty amazing, and thanks
to guest and friend Dave van de Laar for sending in
this image of the star bird, Victoria.

Muskoka Wildlife Centre Photo-shoot

This past weekend I had the opportunity to take part in one of Ray Barlow’s Photography Workshops at the Muskoka Wildlife Centre in Port Severn, near Gravenhurst, Ontario. If you have never taken part in a guided photo-shoot, you need to add the experience to your ‘bucket list’. Frigid temperatures aside, the opportunity to have access to animals such as wolf, fox, lynx and cougar was amazing!

Our small group of photographers was treated to two wonderful guides, who both made sure we got the most we could from the experience. The Muskoka Wildlife Centre is not a zoo, but a rehabilitative centre. Founder Dale Gienow guided our visits with the centre residents. His love of, respect for, and knowledge of the charges in his care was evident throughout the day. Ray Barlow was our photographer mentor, coaching us throughout the day to make sure we went home with ‘the shot’.

Ray is very knowledgeable and has a nice, easy way about him, unobtrusively throwing out helpful hints about animal behavior, the best place to stand, creative composition, and technical issues such as exposure. I really appreciated his approach and advice. This wasn’t a formal class, but rather a mentoring opportunity, where we set our own agenda and drew from Ray’s knowledge and experience as needed. We had an amazing opportunity with this awesome Great Gray Owl, near Kingsville Ontario. These folks were very cool to hire me to tour them to the owl location, and assist with the various needs to create good images of this owl. I admit, I did not need to do a lot, with very skilled photographers, and such an awesome subject!

Fabs and Alfred Forns came all the way up here from Miami! My family joined me for this trip to Windsor for 2 nights in a downtown hotel, and dinner with Al and Fabs, and thanks to Al for being so generous! We had an excellent time with everyone, lots of fun stories, and I did
learn about a technique called the henway!

Impromptu trip to Ontario

"Both Alfred and I have known Ray Barlow on-line for many
years, but neverhad the pleasure of meeting in person.

The opportunity presented itself last week, when we saw
Ray’s image of theGreat Gray Owl in the Kingsville area.

We called Ray and he took time off his busy schedule
to be with us for two days, take us to the GGO and
also, to an amazing place where he conducts
workshops, the Canadian Raptor Conservancy.

As luck would have it, Ray decided to come meet us the same day we
arrived, and we took off for the Owl. We enjoyed her until last light
that afternoon and that was the last time we saw
her. If it had not been for Ray’s idea of taking us there on that
same day, we would have missed the owl completely.

Here are some pictures, some Al’s, some mine. A couple form the
Conservancy and a couple of Short Ear Owls form the
Kingsville area, where we were escorted
by Ray’s local friends.

It was a treat also to get to meet Daisy and Maria, wife
and daughter. He is a wonderful family man
and that is a joy to see.

After a few days of hosting a private tour for some guests from Miami, at the Kingsville Owl location, my family spent the weekend at the Muskoka Wildlife Center with Dale, and Lora as we had guests for Saturday and Sunday workshops. Here are a few of Peter Burian's images from Sunday's workshop at Muskoka Wildlife Centre.

" While I would prefer to photograph lynx, cougar, wolves and other animals in the wild, that's not practical due to time and financial constraints, making Ray's workshop at the Muskoka Wildlife Centre an excellent alternative. The general public does not get entry to the compounds and they don't get to photograph the Saw-whet owl, but we certainly did."

"That made the $200 fee a suitable investment. (In the US, you'd pay far more for a session at a similar facility.) And because we got close to the animals, there was no need for an expensive super telephoto lens. Ray is very knowledgeable and if you need advice, be sure to ask him. Jonathan Balcombe presents The Exultant Ark

My friend and scientist Jonathan Balcombe recently released a book that would be considered the finest
info-book concerning the emotions of animals ever produced. I was asked to contribute a couple of images. One of them covers the opening double page introduction, as my Northern Hawk Owl in flight images was used.

Beauty or Beast?

Ye or Ne?

Ugly? Maybe - Beautiful? that might be a stretch!

If you have a large screen monitor, have a look here to see

a image that is 2560 pixels wide, I think this shot needs

to be large to appreciate it.

I am sure, if you are at all quweeezie, this image may bother you.

For me, it is truth, and reality.

Our guide brought us into this scene when there were just a few

birds on the kill, so about 600 frames later, and

about 1.5 hours, there were about 100 storkes and vultures

enjoying the meal. Myself, I love this kind of shooting.

The trick was to try to get a clean view of the animal, as the crowd

was nothing spectacular to shoot. We waited for the right moment,

Nickson got us into position, and the shots fired! It was exciting!

Remarkably, we even had a great variety of light, as the mix

of sun and cloud provided some very interesting views of contrast.

After going through all my images, my small regret is that I didn't

use a wider focal length, for more depth of field., wishing

I had a full frame camera in hand!

Reality or Fake?

Great Grey Owl near Kingsville

First off, I want to thank my friends Rodney, Randy, and

Jerry especially for introducing me to a new buddy, Kevin. I did have

a great time yesterday photographing the Great Grey Owl.

Listening to all the bickering amongst all the birders and
other photographers was pretty brutal, but the

positive experience of viewing and taking images

of this amazing creature was overwhelming.

Too many people there? Not really, with all the people

scattered about a a fairly busy highway, the traffic was

forced to slow down, which ultimately

provided a safer environment for the bird. This very

nervy and confident species was flying west all day

along the country road. At times it would be cruising only

a few feet above the asphalt, putting itself in danger to speeding cars.

There were people photographing the bird inside of

20 feet. Not nature photographers, people with small

point and shoot cameras. The GGO was complete

and totally unconcerned. The owls that migrate south

from the boreal forests during winter months feed on voles and
mice that spend their winter in swampy low lying
areas, as the ditches along this road provide good habitat
for the rodents.

I arrived early in the am, finished shooting at dusk. To my
knowledge, the bird enjoyed at least 4 rodents.
Watching this owl fly to various perches, and hunt
the entire day was an excellent Real nature experience.

For me, there are 2 concerns - the owl getting hit by a car
and baiters showing up with garbage store bought rats. Most
people know now that releasing different species of rodents
to a new area is illegal in this country. The concern goes
far beyond that.

Hand feeding wild animals and birds is completely unethical
in my opinion. When photographers go out of their way to
create photographs using these non nutritious rats
are making a mistake. This is not nature photography.

Birds and animals should never be habituated to humans
in such a manner. After witnessing several baiting
sessions, I have seen owls follow and approach people
looking for food, and getting far too close! Also, flying across
roads to get closer to people in almost a begging manner.

I have seen owls aggressively approach someone who is baiting, trying
to take the bait out of the persons hand, before it was released. This is simply not
natural. A Northern hawk owl had hundreds of store bought
rats hanging in the trees around its one time hunting grounds. This bird
does not know when to stop taking this junk. After all the baiting, it
doesn't need to hunt for weeks!

Baiting is for the lazy and selfish. In my opinion, people who bait are
absolutely not concerned about the birds welfare. I have many good friends who
have been involved in baiting, this opinions do not reflect a personal
dagger to anyone. I just simply do not agree with what they do!

None of my business? Well, if you saw someone shooting a bald
eagle with a rifle, you would make it your business... Correct?

Feeders? That is not hand feeding a wild animal junk.
Road Kill? Again, animals are not hand fed, and the road
kill is all natural food that will not adversely affect the animals health.

If you are a True Naturalist, and you love real nature, you would
need to learn how to photograph wild birds and animal
in their natural conditions. It takes time, effort, energy,
commitment, and determination.

Once you capture REAL nature shots, you will have something
to be seriously proud of. Very unfortunately, the general public
are not so aware of this practice of baiting. So books and magazines
sell with these images to uneducated fans.

All of this is not a formal study. I am just a photographer
and a true naturalist. I have made mistakes in the field, doing
stupid things in the past, regrettably. But the intention here is
to learn, teach, and get better, as a photographer, and one who
respects nature.

Feed your dog, cat, horse, but leave these wild birds and animals
alone please.

Follow up - Dec 28th, 2011

I heard some baiters wedged a squirrel in some branches
yesterday, and the owl just about broke its wings trying to get
it out, and today it hardly flew at all, recovering from this trauma I am sure.

My message to these clowns, throw you cameras in the garbage, and
leave the wildlife alone., please.

There is nothing in wildlife photography that pisses me off more then pure stupidity.

Now, today, this bird sits on the squirrel all day
until 3 pm, and doesn't move.

People driving here from all over Ontario and USA, to see what?

When the bird was not being abused by morons, it spent the
whole day flying from perch to perch hunting, and catching
natural prey. Again, once the baiters come
along, everything is spoiled, and I am sure they could care less.

LEAVE THE BIRD ALONE!

Waiting for Lift-off!

Lilac-breasted Roller in Flight

One of my seriously needed birds showed up for us in a

big way in Tanzania, during our latest visit in

October 2011. This is one of the most beautiful

birds in the world, with spectacular colours.

We had several perched in short trees along the road

while moving throughout Tarangire National Park.

Perched shots were fun, but the flight shot was the

frame I was looking for! Unfortunately my best

shot was this one with the wings clipped, so I made

something out of nothing here!

How can this be explained? - Tanzania Sunset

We had such an amazing day. First thing in the morning, on
our way out of the luxury tent camp in the Northern Serengeti
we saw an awesome Yellow-billed Stork.

From there, some lions on a kill, then an
awesome Raptor in a tree.

Black Rhinos as close as 30 yards, Hippos fighting, Crocodiles,
a Wildebeest Crossing, a family of Cheetahs on the move, Vultures
and Storks on a kill, and so much more!

Once in a while, you just have a great day in the
field. My friend and guest Wayne Crumm just kept saying "Wow!"
I had just finished firing at least 600 images of the cheetah
family. Then, as we are all exhausted, eagerly

looking forward to a superb meal back at the
camp and over the next hill we run into this!!

The timing could not have been more perfect, the sun was just

a bit bright when we arrived. Using several focal lengths, I was

able to capture several images and views of this amazing scene.

It was late in the day, we were still 45 minutes from camp,

but we hung on to the end. A good solid 12 hours of shooting,

and 2,800 images for this day of October 23rd, 2011.

I tried a pano using this same file as the first image
below, I am not sure which style I like best, but the
first shot fits nicely on my iMac.

Back to Tanzania: Flamingo in Flight!

After a few local workshops, and lots of planning for 2012, I am

finally getting back to some editing of my images from
the recent tour to Tanzania. Picking out a few
images from 11,000+ in total is no easy task.

Our first game drive in Arusha National Park was pretty awesome.

We spent a lot of time with about 20,000 flamingos

who live in volcanic lakes. The colors of these lesser flamingos

are pretty awesome during this time of year.

We were able to view and shoot from a lot of different

positions around these lakes. Finding a good background for a

flight shot was a bit challenging, so I was quite happy with

the result here on this image below. The other difficulty with

flamingos in flight is there is almost always 2-5 other birds

within a few feet of your target bird.

The key to success here is taking "tons" of shots! With this

image I did need to clone out some background birds., they were

just too out-of-focus, and distracting.

What I liked about this shot would be the colors of the

bird, the nice dark background, details, as

it was quite close, soft natural light, and

the wing position.

Hi Everyone !

When Ray sent out an e-mail to everyone for the Nov. 26th
weekend's Bif workshop at the CRC , and I saw the list of birds
flying with a Golden Eagle on the list , I needed to get some
images of this beautiful Raptor, along with some fresh
one's of all the others flying that day.

Drove from Windsor with a friend , that has not been to one of these special workshops before. I've been to at least 10 of these workshops, and different seasons. Snow, Rain or shine every one of these workshops was a different experience, and learned something from Ray about shooting in all conditions.

If you want to have a great time and learn out in the field, Ray is a very good educator in wildlife photography , and so willing to help others and make it a very memorable experience you won't soon forget. The Falconer's that handle these birds are second to none, and give you so many opportunities to capture the image your after,
and they love their job.

These Raptors are in good hands, and well cared for. I asked my friend Ken on the way home after the workshop. Well, what did you think of that ? Ken looked at me with the
biggest smile and said, "that was great".

I said, "would you do it again?" Oh yeah , for sure. It was short ride home. Thanks for the great time Ray, we'll be back. The Barn Owl image here is a favorite of mine, from an ' 09 CRC Bif workshop.

Greetings Ray

Just wanted to share with you some images that I have taken at I guess now 5 workshops that I have taken with you. Really would like to say a HUGE THANKS as I noted I am getting back into photography after 20 years and boy have things changed. Each workshop I have been able to come away with some super shots and its largely due to your guidance, suggestions throughout the various shoots, keeping the group happy maintaining sight lines and focus on customer service. You seem to make this happen seamlessly. Its hard work with different personalities and various skill levels. Congrats.

On a final note allowing me to use you favourite lens, to the detriment of your shooting, in helping me in my decisions on what equipment to purchase really speaks to the focus on your customer. I cannot thank you enough.

I would love to go on the Bella Coola trip and NFD trips and am at the moment planning to try and make it happen. Africa.... would be a dream come true to be in the company of such a great photography and host.

Fast, Slow, and Hungry from Tanzania

First, we have the Fast!!

A family of cheetahs were found on three different occasions

out on the plains of the North Serengeti. A mother, and two

one year old male and a female seemed to spend a

lot of their late afternoon time at the bottom of this

huge tree.

The pair you see here are the cubs. They took a quick break from their

wrestling match to give us a quick look. Late afternoon light,

and a shaded area made exposures and shutter speed difficult.

I like to keep my ISO as low as possible, so the gain of a nice

clean noise free image produces a loss of shutter speed

and the ability to freeze the motion.

Fortunately, these awesome animals were still for this

shot!

Then, the Hungry

While cruising the Ngorogoro Crater, our guide was

made aware (via cb radio) about a family of lions

that were not too far from where we were planing

to exit this conservation Area.

We all decided to spend the balance of the light

for this day with these lions ( 6 animals). They spent most of

their time resting, so all the attention was directed to

the two cubs, who seemed interested in some play.

It was interesting to notice that during our visit to see

so many different lions, in different areas, there

were at least 5 pregnant females. We saw two

females out in solo areas, as they appeared ready to

give birth. I suggested to our awesome guide

Nickson that the lion population in the Serengeti

was alive and healthy, and I was glad to hear him agree.

Last, the Slow!

This Leopard Tortoise entertained all of us with an easy shot!

We all left the truck and took advantage as this cool

looking reptile wandered across the road and trekked

on into the park. I have several angles of this neat

animal, so I will post a few of them later on.

I would say it was about the size of a small football,

and moved along rather quickly. It was fun getting some

head on shots as the turtle seemed to be running directly

towards me!

Thanks again to our Guides. We sure had some spectacular

opportunities during this recent tour.

Hi Ray

I just wanted to say thank you for another successful BIF workshop at the Canadian Raptor Conservancy a week ago. I really enjoy your flight workshops because of the unique photographic opportunity they offer. Being able to photograph these amazing raptors in flight up close is really something special -- something that very rarely happens in the wild.

As always I appreciate your guidance and advice. Although I've been a number of your workshops I'm always learning new things and picking up some new idea to try out. I came home with some 1400 images but have honed my keepers down to a few of my favourites -- hope you like them. I'm already looking forward to joining you again in the future.

North Tanzania

Pretty Amazing Experience!

I have had fun in Tanzania in the past, some pretty cool

and awesome adventures, but this past tour, and our visit

to the north was exceptional.

So many species of animals in such awesome scenes.

We spent a lot of time moving, which really seemed to

work well. The strategy I suggested to my guests was

"hit and run!"

We would find a scene with some very awesome shooting,

do our very best to capture it, and move on to the next

opportunity. This panned out to 2,900 shots

on October 23rd, 2011!

The Vulture scene was incredible... Here we spent some

time working so many different shots to catch.

I did get some nice flights that I will post later on.

I think it will take me at least another month, maybe

into January before I get all my editing finished.

Jut the sunset alone was about 200 images! Various focal

lengths, f stops, and basic set up seemed to work well.

I have at least 4 more shots to edit from this

spectacular scene.

The 2 lion cubs were part of a family of 6 in total.

3 adult females and 3 cubs. I am guessing they were about

6 weeks old. They will not stray to far from the family,

so this was a fairly easy shoot.

Looking back at my settings, it was challenging to

catch sharp images here with the sun fading. Had

we been there 1/2 hour earlier, that would have

been something. The adults were laying asleep for most of

the one hour we spent with the animals. I did most of my

shooting from the top of the safari truck, with a few

lower angle images from the window.

For about an hour, the three of us fired away with

incredible excitement in the air. While shooting, I

was constantly whispering out my settings, and the

changes I am making to help my guests

make choices for their own cameras.

It is very easy to "get lost in the moment"..

This kind of once in a lifetime situation can be

so overwhelming. Even the finest of photographers

can forget about what is going on inside their cameras.

I like to remind people as much as possible

on different approaches to wildlife photography.

This is much more than a snapshot / record making

experience. Creativity begins with your camera settings,

balance, and proper AF perimeters. Knowing the

camera and lens you are using is imperative for success

in Tanzania.

Maria says "thanks!"

My Maria meets a Canadian War Veteran

We were having dinner in a local restaurant tonight, Maria was

showing me the poppy she received from the school today

in class. She was asking Daisy and I a lot of questions about

War, the one that stands out in my mind... "what did they use

to fight with daddy?"

We explained.

Within a minute or 2, an elderly gentleman got up from his chair,

having finished his dinner. I noticed his extensive medals

pinned on his coat, and suggested to maria that she goes over to

him, and says thanks.

"Thank him for what Daddy?" I said he is a war

veteran from the 2nd world war, he fought to save

our freedom many years ago. He is a very special man.

Please go and say hello to him and thank him for everything,

and I will be so proud of you.

In her mothers arm, they walk up to him and offered a hand,

with a thank you. He bent over and said thanks to Maria, and told her:

"Study hard, because You are our Future!'

Of course, I am sitting at my table with tears in my eyes, so

proud of my little girl who is so brave. Her next question...

"What is a future Daddy?"

Daisy and I explained, and she smiled, ear to ear.

Maria loves to study, she loves to learn.

Her dad could not wait to share the story.

Dedicated to my lost friend, A great man and Nam vet,

Mark Ellison Dionne.

Birds in Flight workshop this past Weekend!

We had some very bright sunlight this past weekend

at the Canadian Raptor Conservancy.

Special thanks to falconer James Bradbury for some

awesome handling of these amazing raptors. Having them

fly under controlled conditions is not easy!

So, the birds that flew for us;

Bald Eagle

Steppe + Golden Cross Eagle

Golden Eagle

Kestrel Falcon

Great Horned Owl

Red-tailed Hawk

Harris's Hawk (above)

The sunlight sure helps with the shutter speeds, but

harsh light is not easy to deal with!

We all use different setting for birds in flight, it

is most important that you understand your

exposure and auto focus systems on your

dslr body. Fast reactions sure do come in handy, also

good hand / eye co-ordination.

Fortunately these birds fly between 10 and 20

flights, so we have so many chances for different angles,

and backgrounds with each bird.

Cheetah Hunting in Tanzania

A Proud Male Cheetah

Probably over a thousand images of this young male,

his sister, and mother hanging out in this area of

the Northern Serengeti.

On three different occasions, our guide Nickson found this

family, and sets us up in the optimal position for light, angle

and environment. These three factors are what make

Africa a photographers dream!

All three of us in the six person safari truck had a

full line up of cameras and the lenses needed to

complete the task, and we all came home with mit-fulls

of editing waiting for us!

I found the 200-400 the most used lens in my kit. Using

it for at least 90% of the photography while mounted

on the D300. This male cheetah was about 45 yards from

our vehicle, and we were easily able to capture images

with less than 400 mm @ a 1.5 crop factor on the

sensor. The challenge here was the setting sun... and it

was Spectacular!

I hope to edit a couple more from these two scenes soon!

I would just like to thank you again for the amazing raptor workshop you

hosted at the Mountsberg Conservation area.Being my

first workshop with you, I found your instruction

on creative photography and knack for setting up

wonderful perches, provided the group

with some fantastic opportunities to capture these amazing birds.

I found It easy to get lost while shooting these beautiful creatures,

but thanks for reminding us to check our camera

settings during the shoot,

as this helped me capture some of the best images I have

taken to date.

Lilac-breasted Roller in Tanzania

A most amazing looking Bird!

Popular bird to photograph, this roller species was a lot of

good fun on this latest tour in Tanzania. Our guides were able to

help us find several opportunities, with some very

excellent environments.

Close enough for the D300 / 200-400 combination,

without using the teleconverters, we found this bird to be

very confident, and stubborn about its perch.

They hunt much like our fly-catchers, sitting low on

an open perch, and quickly racing out to snatch a bug,

or flying insect. The combination of a healthy population

of these birds, and also the Little Bee-eaters made

our almost bug free trip much more enjoyable!

I did get a bee sting, not long after peeling and eating an orange!

Once I washed my hands, and discarded the peels, we were fine.

Ouch! on the inside of my 3rd finger!

So, my opinion suggests that the Lilac-breasted Roller

is the most beautiful bird in the world., though

I am sure some folks have different opinions!

I sure look forward to more chances like this while

working on the January 2012 Tour.

Black Rhino Duel in Tanzania, Africa

Black Rhino Charge!

Honestly, some days there was never a dull moment. 3 of us waited
and watched as these two very awesome animals
played a game of cat and mouse!

While on the last leg of our recent tour to several locations

throughout Tanzania, we were so fortunate to see 5 different

Rhinoceros's in the North Serengeti. The most awesome

thing about the parks we visit in Tanzania, is the lack of fences.

Every animal is free, no limits! The basic mandate
of the Government of Tanzania is to allow
nature for take its course, and protect

from poachers as much as possible.

One of the great things about the boost in safari tours is the

ongoing supervision of their parks. I believe there are

4,000 licensed Safari Vehicles in Tanzania, creating a very

awesome "police force". It is in everyone's best interests

to protect these animals from the foolish trade on horns, and

elephant tusks.

We all need to do what we can to keep wild Africa on the right

track. I was very encouraged on my recent tours this year,

seeing a lot of pregnant female lions, and also, several

healthy cheetah families. Tanzania is a world class home

for true nature and wildlife protection.

(now, if we can just get some decent roads in there!)

So, these rhino's are doing well. Watching and photographing

this sparing match was an incredible treat. Nickson,

our driver and guide gave them a very healthy distance

so we were not interfering with the "dance!"

Spotted Hyena at 1/40th

Some luck, and very dark conditions!

D300 / 200-400 VR

1/40s f4 210mm iso 400

At 1/40th of a second and hand holding a large and heavy

camera / lens combination, the slow shutter speed can and will

create a definite challenge!

Fortunately, the bean bag helped a lot! While on our way back

to the luxury camp, we drove by this awesome scene, lucky for us,

we stopped at the last light for a shot.

Bursting my shutter at this slow speed gave me about

10 very blurry images, and 1 sharp one!

These animals do not sit still for long. They are very

hyper, and always hunting. For a sharp image, you need

3 things to happen in wildlife photography...

A proper auto focus set up, with a good lock on your target

A very still subject

A very still camera

The combination of these three factors is especially important

in low light. It sure is nice when everything works out, and you

go home with an image like this one! This bean bag

technique is especially important when you are on an

African tour, the early mornings, and late afternoons always

seem to have something awesome happening, so

be ready!

Tanzania, Home of the Jackal

You might call this animal the African coyote, as the looks and
habits seem so similar.

The Jackal is a curious creature. We saw 4 of them from a
distance crossing the road, from about 1/2 km away approaching
slowly. We were very fortunate to catch
some close views of this family.

The main issue, from a photographers point of view... the light!

I liked the environment so much, so we figured it was worth a try.

Even though the sun was setting, and the light was coming from

directly behind the animals... sometimes these things just seem

to work out!

Techs!

Center weighted metering, aperture priority, - 1/3 ev, @ 1/800 sec,

f4, and shooting with the D300, 200-400 VR @iso 320 and a

focal length of 360mm. Hind sight... I may have
shot even ev, and f7.3 to

acquire a little more depth of field.

The composition might seem a little awkward to some, but
I liked the Jackal's head in the top left
third of the frame, again,

looking back possibly closer to the centre of the top
third would have been better, so for now,

I will leave it as is, and see what you think.

A Battle of Stripes On the Flats of the Ngorongoro Crater

What a scene to Photograph!

Unfortunately, a very sunny and hot day,

maybe around 88 F, with a lot of heat wave rising between us

and these 2 warriors in battle.

The encounter lasted a good 5 minutes, biting, chasing, and climbing

all over each other... Exciting to watch, and also to photograph.

You can see how dry and dusty the crater was during this

time of year, lots of sunshine has burnt out the grasses, as

the dust was a factor on this day.

This image took a bit of extra sharpening on the animals,

but the 2560 x 1440 copy looks pretty cool, even with

the distortion caused by the heatwave. Someday I

will have this printed very large for my office wall. The

experience of witnessing this all natural war is something we

all will never forget.

The Birds of Tanzania

Tanzania has an incredible species list, with
both animals and birds.

Our group was extremely fortunate to find some amazing

looking birds. Here we have one of the most common, and the most

beautiful, the Little Bee-eater. This cute and colorful species
is smaller than a robin, and bigger than a
goldfinch., so relatively small.

They are reasonably comfortable with people, most are approachable

within 30 feet via vehicle, and maybe 35-40 feet on foot. They
seem to have their favorite perches, so when they
venture out for a hunt, it is normal to see them return
back to the same location with a meal.

I have found them to usually perch low in the area where

they are hunting, so they can look up to see their prey against the

sky. Butterflies, bees, dragonflies appear to be the most
likely targets on the menu.

One of the cool and interesting notes concerning photographing

these bird would be the head angles. Since the Bee-eaters

are very active, they are constantly hunting. I find them
to be quite still on their perch, but they are always twitching
their heads looking for the next target above the perch.

In flight, the colors are spectacular, a speedy dart for a

chase, and quick return to kill the prey and swallow it whole.

The Lions of Tanzania

One of the highlights of this recent tour to Tanzania, was the amount of amazing lion encounters.

We had several families, with cubs of all ages to photograph, different environments, angles, light, it was spectacular. Special thanks to Nickson and Paul, our guides... what a great job!

In many cases, we were so close to these animals, I had to put down the 200-400, and use my friend Leigh's 70-200 VR2 that I borrowed for this tour. Also, we really enjoyed the environment., we had a little rain the first day, then sunny skies, mixed with clouds for the rest of the 9 full days of shooting in Tanzania.

Holy Hippo Fight!!

Unbelievable luck! Our driver found a cool Hippopotamus family in the Mara River, and allowed us close to the most dangerous animals in Africa! On foot!! It was spectacular just sitting on the bank watching these huge animals enjoying the fresh flowing water, then suddenly, right in front of my nose, these 2 huge creatures pop up right in front of me twice!!

I guess this was a battle for a mate. One male trying to infiltrate an established group, so we all just sat there in total amazement, while firing hundreds of frames! The whole thing was over in about 3-4 minutes. We could not see any evidence of damage, or injury... but for me, the whole thing was shocking!

Thanks to our awesome guide, Nickson, a great guy, superb driver, 20 years experience throughout the Plains of the Serengeti! This guy can see through trees!

More images as soon as I can get the energy to edit, still baked from all the travel and excitement. Special thanks to all my guests, we had an awesome trip!

If you know me, you know that I am a no bs type of person, so there is no point in sugar coating this week in Newfoundland, we had some bad weather! But, this province is so amazing, we were still able to catch some incredible scenes! Norm Ullock, and his wife Helene were such good customers, no complaining, just great energy! We trekked out there in the rain, fog, and cold to some fantastic sights.

When I think back to our week the weather was a disappointment. But we can’t control weather. When we left for Newfoundland I wanted to get some shots of birds and whales. Despite the difficult shooting conditions, Ray managed to get us to places where we could shoot all of these. I have never done photography in dark and wet conditions like this. Because of this I learned a lot during the week, on how to shoot in difficult light and still come home with some great shots. Ray always stayed positive and worked hard to make sure his guests got the most from the week. Daisy made sure we ate well during the week by providing outstanding meals every night. Ray and Daisy, thanks again for a memorable week. Helene and I look forward to our next workshop with Ray in Tanzania. Norm Ullock

-Features a presentation by Rob Stewart - star and creator of "SHARKWATER", an award winning docu-film that came out a few years ago in theatres around the world. This is his website if you would like to know more about him: www.sharkwater.com
Rob will be talking about his incredible adventures during the making of SHARKWATER and his mission to help people better understand sharks. Some of our staff and animals worked with Rob recently on a new up and coming film project that he will be sharing some secrets about as well.
-The event will begin at the Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre and will then move to the Wenonah II steamship, where we will embark on a 2 hour scenic cruise.
-There will be an auction, featuring some incredible donated items.
-Muskoka Wildlife Centre Staff will be bringing a host of amazing wild creatures on the cruise for people to see, meet and learn about up close including a lynx, birds of prey, a baby fox, opossum, porcupine, beaver, various reptiles... just to name a few.
-There will be lots of delicious gourmet finger foods and deserts prepared by Signatures in Bracebridge.
-There will be a 50/50 draw and door prizes as well.

Just a quick THANKS again for a really super workshop yesterday. Getting back into photography a fair amount has changed. Your chat before the shoot was succinct and apropos. I found myself catching points you covered, so kudos to you, as I would have come home with a pile of mistakes. Appreciated the suggestions throughout the session about exposure, positioning, keeping the group happy and out of everybody's line of sight.

I found you on the Internet and although you are REALLY good photographer I had reservations as I thought this may be a "watch me session" by a cranky photographer. Boy was I wrong.

Learnt a whole bunch, had fun and got some really
cool pics to boot.

Busy Weekend!

2 Workshops this past weekend, the first one at the Mountsberg Conservation Area, the second at the Canadian Raptor Conservecy, south of Simcoe Ontario. Thanks to all my awesome guests, we had a great time! And thanks to rick Quirk for lunch yesterday! Rick hosts the Raptorfest this weekend in Grimsby, Ontario... April 16, 2011. This show takes place at the Grimsby Community Center, in the Arena. And its free!! James Cowen will be flying his birds there, inside the arena, so please join us at this cool event.

I will be there with some prints for sale, and also for a full day Q and A session, so please stop by for a visit! Also, the Muskoka Wildlife Center will be there with some animals too!

On our recent photography tour to Tanzania,
Africa my friend and awesome photographer
David Sparks treked along with us for
the 10 day adventure. He told me he was

Everything about the photo safari exceeded my
expectations. Both Nas and Nickson were very
knowledgeable guides and did an outstanding
job of locating the large animals.
Their ability to spot and identify the amazing
variety ofbirds was an unexpected bonus. Ray
constantly "tweaked" the position of our vehicle so
that we had the best possible lighting and background
for our photos. I learned a lot by
observing his approach to photographing

the wildlife, scenery, and people we encountered. This
was my first trip to Africa, but I hope it is not my last.

Barb Kopeschny is a superb artist from Washego, Ontario., she has been to a few of my workshops, and we are good friends. I enjoy her work immensely, and I am sure you will too... please have a look at her fantastic website here... Click!

BK: Isn't she beautiful!

she is sooooooooooooooooooo beautiful.

BK: So how many yards away from her were you?...

About 25 yards, shorter than the length of your driveway.

BK: What was the average temperature?....

The hottest it got was about 82 F, high noon ... the sun was straight up., got a nice tan! some places we stayed had heating, but no Air Conditioning!

BK: Did you feel safe or vulnerable?

Over all, Tanzania is safer, more pleasant, more secure, then you can imagine ., these people are very special.

BK: What time of day was this shot taken? ….

We saw her at the crack of dawn, about 1/2 km from our luxury tents., and followed her for about 2 hours, around 800 frames, our driver Nickey knew exactly how far we should be away from cheetahs, to allow her to go about her business.

BK: Was there any risk to her with poachers etc.?

Everything is now under control there, very little hunting, almost no poaching; all animals are on the rebound... Tanzania is dealing well with these issues, I was very impressed.

BK: How many people were around you at the time?

Just our safari truck with 3 of us in there, and my other guests truck, with only 2 people. I had 5 signed up, so there would have been 6 of us, but one guy had a family emergency, so we were 3 and 2., tons of room in there for all kinds of gear, water, food, etc... we were even charging batteries as we went along, and uploading to laptops, and doing back up.

BK: Were you able to speak out loud amongst each other while photographing, or were you whispering or were you all completely quiet? …..

Talking voices, these cheetahs are very secure and unafraid of humans... also, the lions were the same... they were right on the road!!, so close we needed to back away.

BK: Amazing! Pretty awesome eh? …..

You could not imagine how awesome this trip was, dream come true... times 10!!!

I want to live there, bad!

BK: Did you find the week went by quickly?

Yes!.. I was gone for almost 2 weeks in total, and I did miss my family... while driving around I was wishing Daisy and Maria were there to enjoy the sights.

BK: Your "luxury" tents, were they safe?

Very safe, Nas has 10 tents there, each tent is worth over $8,000.00 USD., they are as big as a hotel room!

BK: Did the tents have washrooms or were they nearby? ……

Each tent has its own bathroom, and shower.

BK: How was the food and was water drinkable or did you need bottled water?.....

Superb, bottle water everywhere, beer and drinks at the camp too!

BK: Any McDonald's or fast foods nearby? ……

Only in my dreams... Our tour had only three nights at the camp, the rest of the time we were at fine lodges, and hotels, some really amazing accommodations.. My partner Nas wanted me to see it all.

BK: When not on the road in the truck, what did you do back at the luxury tents?

We left the camp / lodges at 6-7 am, Safari breakfast with the wildebeests’, shooting all day, back for lunch around 2pm, shower, then on the trail at 4 pm till dark., then dinner, and sleep. I was the only one who got a mosquito bite!!

BK: After a day of shooting, dinner, socializing, what time were you able to get to sleep? ….

Between 8-9 pm, early nights... as we were always up so early in the morning.

BK: Did you share tents or were they all to yourself? ……

My buddy from Toronto George Campbell shared rooms with me.

BK: Did you forget to pack anything that you really needed?

No, I had it all covered, brought my tripod, should have left it at home.. no need, I would have packed my laptop in my carry-on ... next time., as there was not much to do between flights in Amsterdam Airport.

BK: Too many questions, I know. But I'm re- living your trip through your answers. ;)

Some of your answers were comical..."only in my dreams" but was I amazed at learning that you ate well, had fine lodges & hotels and great accommodations. The" luxury tents" you talked about earlier emails, I thought you were perhaps joking as I imagined some thin, gauzy, pup tents. I am really impressed. Not at all what I imagined Africa adventure to be like. Yet all the wildlife at your dispense, with technical accommodations on board for your laptops etc., and backups. You are practically guaranteed good shots and no worries of being out for the day without backing up your memory cards. My gosh, it doesn't get better than that! …..

Great trip of a lifetime!

Not sure if I told you this... Feb 18th was a special day, 2,400 shots, culled down to 1,200... My best day of keepers ever, culled down to 70 for edit, again a record number of edits, this day was really something.

I have 5 more days to sort out, and then the top 40 for the book to separate, and then I start preparing the book, should be interesting.

BK: That was a good day for sure! Does that reflect on being more careful or selective about shots you take? …..

Awesome!

A good day like this reflects on the number of species I encounter, and the number of scenes I capture with each species., in Newfoundland, we shot gannets for a morning and afternoon shoot... about 10 hours in total... 3,200 shots, culled down to about 520 keepers, culled down to about 6 edited shots... you can see the difference., basically 2 species, and 5-6 scenes.

Lots of work!
